Re: New Keene ultra mini box

I know that having punch plate with sides bent doesn't work. I tried that a few years ago to help maintain the 1 1/2" spacing between the punch plate and the moss/expanded underneath. Pebbles get caught between the bent-down sides and the sluice walls which made it hard to take out without eith...

Re: New Keene ultra mini box

Definitely measure the inside of the sluice, most say 16" but in some cases they are a hair less. The larger grating traps pebbles and it can be a pain to pry out of the sluice if you make it too tight. I believe mine is actually 15 1/2 which leaves about a 1/4" of room on each side. Even ...

Re: 3" Keene Mini Dredge Still Available

Hi Bill, Is that a GX200 with the 3" mini? Hard to read the recoil cover on the pics, just curious as I've yet to see a 200 on a 3" (especially a 3" mini). I haven't purchased a new dredge in nearly a decade so that might be what Keene puts on the 3's now, just seems like a substantia...

Re: New Keene ultra mini box

Only use the BW hose if you plan on working in cold water. That's what it is designed for. If you're a warm-weather prospector then get a thinner-walled hose or use the stock stuff that is ok for all temps. You definitely lose flexibility when you go with hose designed for cold operating temps. Just...

Re: New Keene ultra mini box

In the 4" I use at CC I use a 28" long 4# grate under a 24" long crash plate. I've done nothing to the Keene or Proline 5's as they run nicely with no mods. Haven't messed with a highbanker or combo in years as the shoveling kills my back, but I'm getting ready to get a 2 1/2" co...

Re: New Keene ultra mini box

I like the BW series from Varco, Sanman posted that link. It's very sturdy and clear, designed for colder water use. Some people don't like it because it doesn't coil up easily like the tiger flex, but IMO you really shouldn't be "coiled up" that tightly anyway. Lots of suction hose bends ...

Re: New Keene ultra mini box

Working by yourself is something you should definitely learn to master. Getting up to check the sluice every 5-10 minutes is very normal and is a good habit no matter what size dredge you are using. It's really hard when using a 4 or 5 and your are in full dive gear and dive weights, but you gotta d...

Re: New Keene ultra mini box

The primary key to all fantastic gold recovery systems is classification. Screening down has been proven to be the best way to recovery higher percentages of fine gold. You'll notice that in all larger wash plants (not dredges) that raw material is screened down two or three times before the materia...

Re: Anyone going out this weekend

Yeah, there's only a few places on that creek where you can get in full sun. Even so, that won't help in crap like this. I have a solid 200 gallon ice cube in my shed (275 gallon cleanup container under the shaker table). Geez, a 1500 lb ice cube, that's gonna take a month to thaw out!

Re: Anyone going out this weekend

The challenge of winter mining is definitely fun to tackle. My personal threshold for being cold is pretty broad and I like the mental challenge, but there's not much you can do in water when air temps are that far below freezing. Any water exposed to air instantly freezes. The workable low air temp...

Re: 3" and 4" Keene Dredges Available

Thx Bill. Please keep an eye open for a 5" or 6" for sale. I also still need to get a flair for a 4" Proline.

Re: Anyone going out this weekend

Oh man, sorry it was difficult. The low temps can cause havoc and thick ice is definitely a show stopper. I can deal with frozen snot sickles, but you're done once the sluice riffles start to freeze over. You're pretty much wasting your time at that point. I saw a similar heated sock product on flea...

Re: Anyone going out this weekend

Soup man... bring soup. I love winter dredging. CC turned me on to winter work because of the lack of water there during the summer. Working there between Nov-Feb has taught me a lot about winter dredging, equipment care, and most importantly how to stay warm. I can't count how many trips hav...

Re: Winter is here

I pushed the embankment/easement boulders back in place on the 16th so if they are pulled back out then we have someone who is too stupid to quit.
