Has anyone been to Goochland/Fluvanna line?

Postby nomi » Mon Jun 21, 2010 9:48 pm

I'm reading about the abundance of mines right along the Goochland/ Fluvanna county line, and am wondering if anyone has been down in that area, thanks
Nomi

Here's an excellent link of the county map and the mines...

Here's another informative link, "'Waller' mine, the source of the richest ore to be taken from the Appalachian mountains"

And a good GPS link for the approximate locations of the mines in VA...

most of that is private property. which for our case, we would need permission to access the any creek.
You know, they'll talk you up and down
they'll carry you, round and round.

Hi Nomi,

Fluvanna and Goochland County line. Yes, I had the chance to do some prospecting there. There was a couple very serious attempts to revive the last standing historic gold mine in Virginia. This was called the Moss Goldmine. Several of us invested in an attempt to revive this old mine but unfortunately we would later learn that it was not destined to happen.

Some people will tell you we all got scammed, some people believe it WAS an honest attempt. What ever the story, each day passes and the chances for reviving this old mine get slimmer and slimmer...the old mill house continues to deteriorate and turn to dust.

Image
Here is what the mill house for the Moss Gold mine looked like in the early spring of 2006. The ore shaft that extends off the front of this house still has 2 ore carts full of ore buried 125 feet below the surface

Image
Here is another angle of the mill house. An ore track extended off the left side of this house and fed a tailing pile

Image
Here you can see some of the foundations for the crushers and in the lower left corner you can see where the
roof has collapsed. The weather continues to ravage the building

Image
Structure wise 80 percent of the building was still sound

Image
Here is 4WD standing by the ore tipple that was fed by the main shaft

Image
Here is one of the jaw crushers that was used the last time this mine was in operation in the 1990's

Image
And the ball mill, these were for sale five years ago, sadly, I believe they are all gone now

Four of us purchased the 28,000 ton tailing pile. We did find traces of gold but unfortunately the lack of water made this impossible to work. Here is the old thread:

Bob and I did manage to prospecting the creek on the mine site. Here is the thread:

As of today, resurrecting this old mine is still a possibility, however lacking the $ 500,000 purchase price, the outlook doesn't look good.

The Fluvanna/Goochland county line is a historically rich area. This is the story of one of the mines.

I will also add the Tellurium gold mine property, all 800 acres, is also on the market.

Tinpan, the owner of the Jaw crusher stated that he has painted it black and it now has a motor - asking price $1,000. The asking price for the ball mill is around $3,000. Also, the owner stated that he has a "Batch Mill" available for around $1,000. Thanks, RuffandTuff.

Wow thanks for the replies and the info, I'd like to explore other different areas than CC, and I'd like to get down to a meeting and see about paying dues and meeting some people from Dillwyn...

I'm also in somewhat of a gold fever streak, because I'll be leaving for Michigan in about a week and a half, so in between studying for my summer Finite Math class, I've been running to the creek to see what I can find. I've also been looking at the possibility of gold in Michigan, and there were a couple mines in the Upper Pennisula. There also has been traces found in many creeks streams and rivers in many counties, so I'll definitely be bringing my pans and testing some places out.

I have a sister who lives near columbia.
She has a river behind her house.
In the summer the water gets low enough to walk on it.

I will try to go there this summer with the boys.

Not sure if I can find anything in there.
I am also looking for other locations near Richmond VA.

Not sure if Timber was offering his location to others or just mentioning it.
