just two counties and both were inside the belt - doesn't stop me from looking though.
I grew up and currently live on the western portion of the state and keep a pan in the truck...ya just never know when or where a little gold might be hiding.

Only one in VA so far. That's Louisa. It's the only one I've tried. But 7 for GA, 7 for NC, and 4 for Tennessee, as well as 2 for California, 2 for Maine, 2 for Colorado, and 1 each for SC, SD, AL.

I'm very curious where you may have found gold in Rockingham County! I live only 30minutes from Harrisonburg. Feel free to PM me.

South fork of the Shenandoah river west side of Elkton. There is a canoe ramp next to the bridge on old spotswood trail Rte33. I found fine gold in the gravel bar next to the class 1 rapids. Outstanding smallmouth action as well.

Interesting! Never thought gold was so close to my house. It amazes me where gold can just show up all the sudden and then you got other prospectors looking in the same river for more. Where theres fine flakes there's most likely others as well. Was this an all day trip or just a few hours?

The gold there is closer to dust than flake. There was a nugget patch just west of Harrisonburg described as the DJ Meyers prospect. http://www.dmme.virginia.gov/DMR3/dmrpdfs/vamin/VAMIN_VOL31_NO04.pdf Although it looks like the suburbs have paved over this spot.

Man, that bites.... No wonder when I asked people about that location no one new what I was talking about.... Dust is cool to find every now and then however, would it not be safe to assume there are bigger chunks hidding up river? I figure this gold dust was only dust because it got pounded into dust during transport by the other rocks.

'Dust is cool to find every now and then however, would it not be safe to assume there are bigger chunks hidding up river? I figure this gold dust was only dust because it got pounded into dust during transport by the other rocks.'

Actually no .. Gold is not pounded to dust by rocks . It formed as specks, fines, coarse or bigger in the host rock .
Gold may get pounded flat, but it is not likely ground up in the transport process .. Possible, but not likely ..
The type of gold you find (fines, coarse etc.) depends more on how the gold was formed in the host rock, which then
deteriorated and released the gold as placer deposits ..
Many placer deposits are nothing but fine gold . Some have large gold (big nuggets) , but they are few and far between, and have probably been worked hard by the old timers . But for the most part in Va., you will find mostly
fines, coarse, a few pickers and the occasional nugget ..Mostly fines though .. But fine gold is the bread and butter for many miners .. It adds up ..
Another factor is, that fines will travel further from the source . They are lighter and more easily moved by water flow . As you said, it could well be, that bigger gold lays upstream . But not for sure. Only one way to find out .
Hope this helps, and good luck .
