Favorite Gold Prospecting Pics

Postby shack » Thu Mar 13, 2014 9:47 pm

It's been a while since we've done this, so let's get this going again.

Favorite gold prospecting pictures: Post a picture that you took regarding the hobby of gold prospecting:

1. Give the photo a single line title or caption.
2. Tell us who or what is in the photo.
3. Tell us why it's special to you.
4. Don't pepper the thread with dozens all at once. Just one at a time every so often! :D

Let see what kind of cool collection of memories we can build and share with each other here.

The three of us loaded up with prospecting gear and hit the hills in Northern California in 2009 in search of the good stuff. It's special to me because when you're out there doing this stuff in an area like that, you can't help but feel insignificant and humble, almost unworthy. While standing on a trail they built by hand 120 years ago, you see the remains of their faithful labor and learn to appreciate their sheer determination against more odds than we can imagine. It provides a constant source of encouragement that is needed from time to time in this hobby.

They are the giants and it's their shadow we stand in.

This one is from May 26th 2007 and is taken on the Johnson Goldmine in Goldvein Virginia. It features Adawg and a little friend of his. I was to learn of Adawg's aversion to snakes that day. You can see this one in his sluice box, not wanting to kill it, we or I should say mostly I tried to shoo it along. It went up his sluice box and back down his sluice box, around his sluice box and even under it, but it would not leave. Adawg lost a good half hour of prospecting time because of that snake. We saw about six snakes that day.

Caption: Burning of the britches .

A few years back, Shack, Kev, and myself spent way too much time in the back country without a shower or change of clothes . Things were
getting a little, no way too rank . No need to try to salvage those clothes or shoes . And they were not getting in the jeep with us back to civilization !
We burned everything ! Yeah, that bad ! Good times, great memories !

In the photo: My son Chris and a Keene 4" and Keene 3" dredge.

It's fun getting kids involved in prospecting. I convinced my oldest son to help me on a project in the middle of winter. He went out a few times and did very well. Since the gold was good, I made him "earn" it that winter, he froze his butt off! Winter prospecting is great, excellent water flow. Some of the fondest memories I have with my son were made when prospecting, and I'm fortunate to have a hobby that we both enjoy to give us a chance to spend time together. Chris joined the Army last year and is now deployed in Afghanistan.

This photo was first posted here on February of 2005 and it was from one of the first VA Gold group outings we did. The end of 2004 pretty much found a group of folks, bored out of their mind searching for gold on the internet. I remember my first post was New Year's Eve in 2004, talk about needing to get a life. Anyway, the next couple weeks found us posting pictures of gold we were finding and discussing where we were finding it. By the second week in February we were organized and met at the Gold mining park in Goldvein for our first outing. Pictured ltor Butch, Troy, Bman, Dave PA, Tinpan, Pick, Slick50, MAC and Dadkaz's son. From this point on we decided to change the rules and openly discuss what we were finding and where we were finding gold.

In Photo: My 7 year old Brendan.

This is my little helper when I hit the creeks. On this particular day he got up from the sluice and said " You sluice and I'll find the gold". So I tried to show him what he needed to do. He told me hang tight and that he's got it, followed by watch this. All said and done he pulled some color his first few pans. He made his dad proud! Another man with a pan in the house. It's going to be a good summer.

Caption : Before the ban ......

This shot is a bit painful . Here we have our dredges lined up side by side on the North Fork Salmon, in the shadows of Yellow Jacket ridge,
northern Cali . This was from the Eagle Rock mining expedition, just a week or 2 before the 8/6/2009 dredging ban in Cali .
The countless memories from that trip will last a lifetime . I'm sure more to come on this trip .
